Servicing the Spark
Plug-Kohler Engine
Service Interval: Every 200 hours—Check
the spark plug (Kohler
engine).
Every 500 hours—Replace
the spark plug (Kohler
engine).
Ensure that the air gap between the center and side
electrodes is correct before installing the spark plug.
Use a spark plug wrench for removing and installing
the spark plug and a gapping tool or feeler gauge to
check and adjust the air gap. Install a new spark plug
if necessary.
The spark plug is RFI compliant. Equivalent alternate
brand plugs can also be used.
Type: Champion XC12YC or equivalent
Air Gap: 0.030 inch (.76 mm)
Removing the Spark Plug–Kohler
Engine
1. Disengage the PTO and ensure the parking brake
is engaged.
2. Stop the engine, remove the key, and wait for all
moving parts to stop before leaving the operating
position.
3. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug.

4. Clean around the spark plug to prevent dirt from
falling into the engine and potentially causing
damage.
5. Remove the spark plug and metal washer.
Checking the Spark Plug–Kohler
Engine
1. Inspect the spark plug
Note:
If you see light brown or gray on the
insulator, the engine is operating properly. A
black coating on the insulator usually means the
air cleaner is dirty.
Important:
Do Not clean the spark plug.
Always replace the spark plug when it has a
black coating, worn electrodes, an oily film,
or cracks.

3. Set the gap to 0.030 inch (.76 mm).
Installing the Spark Plug–Kohler
Engine
1. Install the spark plug. Make sure that the air gap
is set correctly.
2. Tighten the spark plug to 18 to 22 ft-lb (25 to 29
N-m).
