Basic Operation
4-2 AlphaServer 1000 Rackmount Owner's Guide
Turning the System On
Systems with Preinstalled Software
Your server may be shipped with preinstalled operating system software. If your system
displays the SRM console prompt (>>>) after starting up, you can verify which operating
system is installed by typing this command:
>>> show os_type
If operating system software is preinstalled, the resulting display indicates one of three
operating systems: Microsoft Windows NT, DEC OSF/1, or OpenVMS.
If your system displays the Windows NT (ARC) console instead after starting up, you can
verify which operating system was installed by switching to the SRM console and entering
the
show os_type
command. Refer to "Switching to the DEC OSF/1 and OpenVMS
(SRM) Console" in this section.
To turn on a system that has the operating system already installed, perform these steps:
1. Make sure the top cover of the system unit enclosure is in place. The system will not
start if the cover is not in place.
2. Plug the power cord into a wall outlet.
3. Turn on any external options that are connected to the system, such as monitors or
terminals, or expansion boxes that house storage devices.
4. Press the On/Off switch on the front of the unit. The green On/Off indicator on the
front of the system will light.
5. Figure 4–1 shows the location of the On/Off switch. In the On position, the switch is
depressed and remains depressed.
