Specifying the Controller: First Parameter
To name a peripheral device, you must name the controller that manages it. The first
parameter (
controller
) points to the device controller's memory-mapped I/Oaddress.
You can specify standard controllers by their device mnemonic; Table B-4 lists both
the mnenomic name and the memory-mapped I/Oaddress associated with each
standard controller.

To specify this controller:
Mnemonic
I/O Address
Enter one of these values:
The simplest device specification combines the device mnmonic with the controller
parameter specification. For example,
specifies the first SCSI disk unit on
the first SCSI adapter. In both cases, the disk hardware is jumpered according to its
default factory configuration.
To
explicitly
specify a controller, you use its I/Oaddress as the first parameter. For
example, rather than
the specification is
. You should
need to use this method only if you have nonstandard devices configured with your
system; refer to the Specifying Nonstandard Boot Devices" section of this appendix.
When you boot over a LAN, the bootstrap device is your computer's LAN controller.
Therefore, the minimum LAN boot path is simply your LAN controller's device driver
name:
,
,or
. If you have more than one LAN controller of the
same type, you specify the controller number inside the parentheses. For example, the
specification for a
second
Hawk VME Ethernet controller is
.
