VOLTAGE DROP TEST
The voltage drop test is to find a part or circuit with
excessive resistance.
The voltage drop in a circuit occurs due to resistance
when a circuit is in operation.
Perform the test on harnesses referring to the wiring
diagram.
A circuit is considered to be normal if the resistance
tester shows “0
Ω
” of resistance when putting tester’s
probe to one line of harness.
The current does not fully flow when only one wire in
harness is complete.
One wire strand of a harness has a high resistance
against current and its voltage drops is very slight.
Unnecessary resistance can occur due to the follow-
ing causes:
1. Broken wire in harness only (one line of harness
for example)
2. Corrosion on switch contact surface
3. Loose or twisted harness
If it should be repaired, use a harness with specified
sizes or larger.

VOLTAGE DROP MEASUREMENT - METHOD
1. Connect the resistance tester to the connector or
circuit for inspection. Connect the tester’s positive
(+) probe to the point close to power terminal and
negative (-) probe to the point close to ground.
2. Operate the circuit.
3. The tester shows what voltage is used to move the
current through the circuit.
According to the example below, 4.1 V of voltage drop occurs between the battery and the bulb.
SYMPTOM: THE BULB’s BRIGHTNESS IS WEAK OR IT DOES NOT OPERATE.
