Gear Lever
The motorcycle has a 5-speed gear transmission. The
gear lever connects to a ratchet mechanism in the
transmission. After selecting a gear, the gear lever
returns to the central ‘home’ position, so that the
next gear can be engaged. The neutral gear is located
between first gear and second gear. From the neutral
position, press the gear lever down to engage first gear.
Raise the gear lever one step to shift up a gear.
As the gear leaver connects to a ratchet mechanism,
you cannot shift up or down one gear in one operation.
To shift from second gear to first gear, or vice versa,
the shift lever passes through neutral position but does
not stay there. To engage the neutral gear, stop it in
the middle of moving from first gear to second gear.
Caution (ST-250 Only)
When the transmission is in the neutral position,
the neutral indicator light is lit on the instrument
board. Even if the light is lit, be careful to
release the clutch grip slowly to make sure the
transmission is really in the neutral position. When
changing to a gear while driving at a high speed,
the change may cause a sudden increase in engine
speed. Before engaging a lower gear, slow down the
motorcycle to prevent unnecessary wear and tear
on the transmission system.
