Installing Software

Installing Windows NT

To install Windows NT on any PC-based hardware, you typically need:

a floppy drive for the three Windows NT setup diskettes, and

a CD-ROM drive for the installation CD

Since the open controller does not have an onboard floppy or CD-ROM
drive, you will need to add hardware to your system or adjust you
installation procedure to load Windows NT.

The following sections provide general information on the options available
for installing Windows NT. Although we have found it easiest to adjust the
installation procedure, the method you choose depends on your system
setup and other needs.

Adding hardware to load Windows NT on the open controller

Adding a floppy drive

You can add an external floppy drive that draws power from the keyboard
port and connects to the parallel port on your open controller. The
recommended floppy drive and cables are bundled under catalog number
1747AV-OCFD, which is available from:

Automation Value, LLC
phone: (423) 609-0222
[email protected]

Or, you can use the

hostsvr

utility on the open controller diagnostic disk

as a temporary floppy drive solution.

Hostsvr

 makes a remote PC

connected to COM2 of the open controller appear as a floppy drive on the
open controller (see page 6-3).

Adding a CD-ROM drive

The 3.5" IDE headers on the 1747-OCIDE1 and 1747-OCIDE25 modules
support an external IDE CD-ROM. To power the CD-ROM drive, you will
need a separate power supply that can provide both 5V dc and 12V dc
(typically). If you have a spare PC, you can remove the power supply and
connect one of the power connectors to the CD-ROM.

With a floppy drive and CD-ROM attached to the open controller, you can
load Windows NT using the standard installation procedure.
