Checking the Z position via effort and air gap
The probe tip is located in the center above the measuring window of the IC
ionization chamber:
• Release the locking lever on the adjusting knob for the Z axis.
• Move the probe tip further downwards while observing the light gap be-
tween the probe tip and the measuring chamber. As soon as the light gap
disappears, you have reached the destination (1).
As soon as the probe tip touches the measuring chamber, you should stop ad-
justing the Z micrometer screw downwards. Otherwise, you would exceed the
exact Z position, your adjustment would be less accurate and you would exert
unwanted pressing force on the probe tip and the measuring chamber.
If you keep adjusting the probe tip further downwards after touching the
measuring chamber, you will notice that the effort required to adjust the Z mi-
crometer screw decreases. The XRS 4 is then raised in the rotary feedthrough,
resulting in an air gap between the XRS 4 and the rotary feedthrough (2).
• If you have positioned too far downwards, adjust the micrometer screw
back again until the XRS 4 is properly seated in the rotary feedthrough and
no pressing force is exerted any more, however, the probe tip is still touch-
ing the measuring chamber.
In order to find the optimal Z position, it is helpful to set the probe tip higher
and then lower again as soon as it touches the measuring chamber while at
the same time observing the varying effort required to adjust the Z microm-
eter screw.
• Secure the Z positioning using the locking lever on the adjusting knob for
the Z axis.
