Bi-directional Communication
The PC is capable of bi-directional communication. Data stored in the PC and the local LIS or HIS of the
hospital can be transmitted to each other. Data transferred includes the followings:
Transmitting patient information to instrument
Transmitting the testing data to LIS or HIS
Data for the samples

Communication Introduction
The UNION hosting module is a framework designed to connect the Instrument with a centralized PIMS/LIS
(Host). It offers the basic infrastructure required to manage the connection between these entities in an easy
and flexible way.
The framework relies on Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) is to provide the service model used to
transfer data between the Instrument and the Host. WCF is a framework for building service-oriented
applications. Using WCF, data can be sent as asynchronous messages from one service endpoint to another. A
service endpoint can be part of a continuously available service hosted by LIS, or it can be a service hosted in
an application. An endpoint can be a client of a service that requests data from a service endpoint. The
messages can be as simple as a single character or word sent as XML, or as complex as a stream of binary
data.
The transport layer chosen for message delivery is Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), which provides a fast,
reliable and flexible way to communicate between processes on the same instrument, different instruments
over a local network or even the Internet. There are several ways to connect an instrument with its Host, the
following section outlines a few options.
