Lower unit

Shimming (counter rotation model)

Shimming workflow

TIP:

• Shimming is not required if the backlash is within specification.
• Shimming is required when assembling the original inner parts and a new lower case.
• Shimming is required when replacing the pinion, forward gear, reverse gear, bearings, shaft, and

housing.

Remove the water pump 
assembly.

Measure the backlash and 
propeller shaft free play before 
disassembly.

Within 
specification?

Shimming is not required.

Disassemble the lower unit.

Select the pinion shims (T3) 
and propeller shaft shim (T4).

Assemble the lower unit.

Measure the backlash.

Within 
specification?

Install the water pump 
assembly.

Adjust the forward gear shim 
thickness (T2) and reverse 
gear shim thickness (T1).
