Operator Guide
offline
Devices not under the active control of a central processing unit.
For example, a computer makes output to a magnetic tape. The
tape is then used by an offline printing system to produce printed
data. Offline operations are much slower than online operations.

offset
A stacking option that the operator can select. The edge of each
printed set is placed a few inches from the edge of the other
printed sets.
offset printing
Widely used method of commercial and corporate printing,
where ink is picked up by a metal or paper plate, passed to an
offset drum, and then passed to the paper.
online
Devices under the direct control of a central processing unit, for
example a printing system in interactive communication with a
mainframe. See also offline.
open
To select an icon or menu in order to view its contents.
OpenWindows
A graphical user environment that runs on Sun Microsystems
computers.
operating system
Computer software that controls the low level operations of
computer hardware, including input and output to memory, disk
drives, and peripherals. See also DOS; SunOS; ULTRIX; UNIX;
VMS.
operation
Well defined action that, when applied to any permissible
combination of known entities, produces a new entity.
operator area
The 24 inch exclusive clearance that must be available directly in
front of each component of an LPS for operator activities.
operator
command
Statement to control a program, issued through a console
device, PC UI, or terminal, causing a control program to provide
requested information, alter normal operations, initiate new
operations, or terminate existing operations.
orientation
An image position relative to a page. Describes whether the
printed image is parallel to the long side of the paper (landscape
orientation) or to the short side of the paper (portrait orientation).
origin
In reference to image area, this is the upper left corner of a
sheet.
option
A parameter on the command line. Also, the names that are
listed in the menus, when an icon or menu is selected.
output
1. Material produced by a peripheral device of a computer, such
as a printout or a magnetic tape. 2. Result of completed
operations.
