Glossary-10 Operator Guide
error message message displayed on the system or printed on an error page,
informing you of an error or a fault that occurred with the
processing of a job.
error page A page printed at the end of a print job that includes any error
messages, if any occurred.
Ethernet The network architecture standard consisting of a coaxial cable
and associated components for connecting workstations to each
other, to file servers, and to peripherals. This communication
system enables workstation users to share information and
services.
EtherTalk Hardware interface and network management software for Apple
Macintosh computers that provides connection to an Ethernet
network.
extended metrics Measurements used in Interpress to alter the size of fonts,
allowing more precision with character escapement. Used for
rendered characters.
extension Portion of a filename that follows a period. In some instances the
extension identifies the file type. For example, .ps could specify a
PostScript file.
fault A condition which prevents proper processing of a print job and
requires the intervention of an operator. For example, a paper
jam is a fault.
FCB forms control buffer. Buffer for controlling the vertical format of
printed output.
FDL forms description language. LPS resident source language used
for designing electronic forms. See also FSL; form.
field 1. Part of a record that serves a similar function in all records of
that group, such as name and address field. 2. Area or setting of
practical activity or application.
file Set of records or text that can be stored and retrieved. An
organized, named collection of records treated as a unit. For
offline, it is the data between the two tape marks. For online, it is
the data between banner pages.
file of files Sometimes referred to as FOF. An ASCII text file, consisting of a
number of TIFF files or of a number of ASCII files to be printed
as one job.
file protection To prevent the contents on a disk or tape from being erased or
written over by disabling the write head of a unit.
filename A name of a file or a directory.
