Measurement time (s)
: Duration of the measurement
Light energy (J)
: Power of the light source
SNR threshold (V): internal setting, do not change!
Decimal places (thickness):
Desired amount of digits for the display of the thickness value
Save raw data:
Activate the checkbox to save raw data during the measurement
NOTICE
The CoatMaster does not require the raw data for operation. We recommend to deactivate all check-‐
boxes.
Blank measurement:
When clicking on Start measurement a window opens prompting to cover the
IR-‐lens and to start a blank measurement by clicking OK. This blank measurement serves as reference
for later sample measurements, as it represents the environmental conditions.
5.7.2
Calibration via material database
The material database enables a fast putting into operation of the CoatMaster.
The calibration is done according to material properties. Our material database is continuously ex-‐
panded and replicated with the latest measurements and materials. However, deviations of the coat-‐
ing material from the standard materials might lead to errors in the measurement values.
5.7.3
Calibration via reference measurements
Most coatings processes are specified by an upper and lower limit value for the coating thickness
(tolerance area). For calbration we recommend to use at least one sample with a coating at the lower
or upper limit of the tolerance area. On these reference samples, carry out two measurements each
with the CoatMaster and mark the measurement points, so that the coating thickness can be meas-‐
ured with a reference method at the same measurement points.
For optimum results we recommend to use the same materials and parts for calibration as used later
on within the process. However, the CoatMaster tolerates certain deviations between calibration and
measurement as follows:
1.
Calibration on metal alloys and measurement on other alloys. Differences within the alloys
have no or very little influence on the measurements.
2.
Calibration on thin plates, measurement on thick plates (activate the checkbox „Enable varia-‐
tion of substrate properties“ in the software).
3.
Calibration on plane surfaces, measurement on bend surfaces.
The following factors influence the CoatMaster measurement, so that there should be the same con-‐
ditions during calibration and measurement:
1.
Surface roughness: If the measurement is carried out on rough surfaces, the calibration
should be done on rough surfaces as well.
2.
Coating surface: If only a small area or a discontiguous area is coated, the calibration should
be done on the reduced area as well.
