Waviness of a powder coating after curing
The thermal testing of coatings compensates this waviness described above automatically by an opti-‐
cal averaging. This enables a reliable determination of the coating thickness – even for changing pa-‐
rameters.
5.3
Measuring wet coatings before drying
From a wet coating the solvent evaporates slowly, so that the coating thickness decreases gradual-‐
ly. This fact has to be considered when calibrating.
If, e.g. the calibration measurement is carried out one minute after the coating was applied, then
the real measurement later on during the process must also be carried out one minute after coat-‐
ing application, so that the calculation of the CoatMaster for the dry (cured) coating corresponds
to the calibration specification.
5.4
Measuring rough surfaces
For rough surfaces we recommend to use a reference method for calibration, as e.g. weighing
and to operate with a large measurement area of the CoatMaster. With an inductive reference
method the surface influence would be too strong to achieve representative results.
