AM/FM Stereo Tuner

(four connection points). Discard the mounting clamp (if provided); it will not be used.

Leave the ground lug free. It will be connected later.

– Install T4 –

IF transformer

. Orient so the red dot matches up with the “RED” label on the

PWB. Trim the leads and bend them over to secure the device on the board. Solder (four

connection points). Discard the mounting clamp (if provided); it will not be used. Leave

the ground lug free. It will be connected later.

Find tubes V1 – V6. Set them aside in a safe place. The tubes will be installed during the final

checkout process.

– Mount the 14 standoffs on the foil side of the board using the 4-40 hardware provided. Use

a lockwasher on the screw head (component side) of the board. Standoffs are positioned at

the four corners of the PWB and on each side of each tube socket. On V3 and V4, include

a ground lug and lockwasher on the component side of the board at the mounting hole

adjacent to the ground lug from each IF transformer (T3 and T4). Place the a lockwasher

between the ground lug and the PWB. This will space the ground lug above the board and

prevent contact with other connection points on the board.

– Connect the ground lug from T3 to the ground lug at V3. Solder.

– Connect the ground lug from T4 to the ground lug at V4. Solder.

In the following steps the tube sockets will be installed and connected. These steps will

require a considerable amount of time and patience. Successful completion is critical to proper

operation of the tuner.

– Mount the five sockets on their respective standoffs. Pin 1 of the socket can be identified

by a number stamped on the bottom side of the socket. Pin 1 on the PWB is identified by a

square pad. Place the socket in the proper orientation over the PWB so it rests on the

standoffs. The top of the socket (the side the tube plugs into) should face outward. Loosely

tighten the mounting screws. See Figure 5.2

. Note there are three 7-pin sockets and two

9-pin sockets.

– Find the 8-pin tube socket. Set it aside. It will be used later.
