When the ADES connection between PedalPro and Pedalino is ac-
tive, the controls in the PedalPro are not available. Before assigning
or changing an expression control to the expression pedal or config-
uring other ADES settings in the PedalPro, you must first DISCONNECT
the Pedalino from the PedalPro by pressing the ADES ON/OFF switch
on your Pedalino.

ADES - AN IN-DEPTH LOOK
PedalPro and Pedalino communicate using a specific protocol designed
by VR called ADES (Advanced effect DEScriptor). The ADES protocol is a
bidirectional data protocol used for controlling the effects’ parameters.
Why a new protocol?
The MIDI protocol was designed in the 70’s for simple one-way data com-
munication. For our purposes at VR, we needed a more flexible, bidirec-
tional data communication protocol that would allow for the control of
effects’ parameters with different resolutions, while also using fewer data
packets, and maintaining opto-isolation between the PedalPro and Pe-
dalino.
What you can do with it
It is the ADES protocol that makes it possible for you to control, in real-time,
the parameters of PedalPro’s effects using your Pedalino with an expres-
sion pedal attached. ADES also makes it possible for you to enjoy the con-
trol brought about by the Tap Tempo Mode and the Virtual Board Mode.
The effect’s parameters that you can control, and their ranges, are listed
in the grid on the next page. Parameters with
user-defined
ranges are
located at the end of the table.
No need for programming
Like with the MIDI CC (continuous controller), the Expression Parameter
Control assignment located in the menu of the PedalPro allows you to as-
sign one of the parameters of PedalPro’s effects to your expression pedal.
However unlike a MIDI CC, there’s no convoluted programming needed in
order to achieve a smooth sound control. Once you have selected it, you
are ready to play.
The ADES protocol also offers a much higher resolution, allowing you to
avoid the unpleasant uneven sound control variation typical of a MIDI CC.
ExprCtrl

on page 49.
This is the
parameter
of one of the PedalPro’s analogue effects that is con-
trolled by the expression pedal connected to the Pedalino™ Foot Controller.
