Counting SMD Reels with an EPD
Begin by centering the last empty pocket before
the first part to be counted between the scribe lines
on the tape guide located under the EPD sensor.
The green and orange LEDs on the top of the sen-
sor should be lit, indicating that the center hole in
the empty pocket has been detected.
This alignment is essential to the EPD functioning
properly. If the alignment is inadequate, the sen-
sor will detect an incorrect number of empty pock-
ets. If this is found to be the case while counting
the reel, abort the count and realign the carrier to
the EPD sensor. This is done by pressing the ESC
key to return to the Setup screen. Advance to the
Align Tape screen and repeat the alignment proce-
dure.
Pressing the ENT key will then advance to the Run
screen. It is important that the EPD sensor’s
green and red LED lights are both lit when the ENT
key is pressed. (See Figure 1-33). Otherwise, the
counter may not perform properly, detecting false
empty pockets or missing actual empty pockets.
The Run Screen will appear as shown in Figure 1-
34.
The counter will now begin counting parts and
detecting empty pockets that pass through the
count head, whether the carrier is moved by hand
or by the takeup motors.
The counter will not begin transferring the carrier to the take-up reel until the STOP/GO key is
pressed. If the leader of the reel is too short to attach to the take-up reel with the first part aligned
under the EPD sensor, the operator can pull the carrier through by hand and attach it. Once the
carrier tape is attached to the take-up reel, press STOPGO and the counter will begin transfer-
ring the reel. The speed at which the counter pulls the reel can be set with the speed control
beneath the LCD screen. Alternatively, part or all of the reel can be transferred by hand.
The arrow symbol indicates the direction in which the counter is counting the reel. The present
count of parts and empty pockets is also displayed. If the EPD is disabled, EPD=OFF will appear
instead of a count of empty pockets detected.
STOP/GO=RUN indicates that the counter will begin running when STOP/GO key is pressed.
While the counter is running, pressing the STOP/GO key will stop the counter.
