Counting SMD Reels with an EPD
When counting SMD reels with an EPD module installed and enabled, the Versacount II+ will
keep a count of the number of pockets between the start and stop point on the reel. In addition to
this, it will detect whether a part is present in each pocket, track the number of empty pockets it
detects, and adjust the total count of parts accordingly.
Using the optional EPD also makes it possible for the counter to detect the end of the reel and
automatically stop the counter when a set number of consecutive empty pockets are detected.
Note:
The EPD only works with embossed tape. It cannot process paper tape.
Before a reel can be counted, the correct stop point, carrier tape pitch, count direction, and EPD
settings must be set in the Setup Screen.
Setup Screen
While the Main Menu is displayed, press the left
arrow key to access the Setup Menu. The Setup
Screen will appear similar to that shown in Fig-
ure 1-28.
Five settings are displayed on the Setup Screen
when the EPD option is installed: The stop
count, the counting direction, the carrier tape
pitch, the EPD enable, and the consecutive
empty pocket fail setting.
When the Setup Screen first appears, STOP will flash continuously. This indicates that this set-
ting is ready to be changed. If a change is desired, enter the new number with the number keys
and press the ENT key. If no change is desired, pressing ENT will advance to the next setting.
Each of the available settings will cycle in this way.
Stop Count
The STOP setting sets the number of pockets the counter will advance before stopping after
STOP/GO is pressed. With the setting shown in Figure 1-28, the counter will automatically stop
once it has counted 100,000 parts. The STOP value can be any number between 0 and
999,999. If the variable is set to 0, the counter will not stop until the STOP/GO key is pressed.
The total parts count is not reset back to zero until the operator exits Run mode or changes the
count direction. Therefore, the stop count can be used to count a reel in intervals as well as to
confirm that a specific number of parts is present on the reel.
For example: A reel of 2000 parts is to be counted and a marker placed on the reel after every
one hundred parts. This task can be automated by setting the stop count to 100. With this set-
ting, the counter will stop after counting 100 parts and wait until the operator presses the STOP/
GO key again. Then it will count another 100 parts. It will keep a running total, stopping at 100,
200, 300, 400, 500, etc. until the operator exits Run mode.
