Plastic loops are required for mounting. The maximum distance between
loops must not exceed 19.68 in / 500 mm. If no plastic lines are avail-
able, the installation of steel pipes with identical dimensions, which have
been electro-galvanized, both inside and out, is permissible. In regards
plastic lines, the following minimum bending radii must be adhered to:

Only factory lines or lines of identical quality (e.g. SAE J844 TB Tubing)
may be used.
Caution:
In the event of modifications to the brake or air
supply lines; a new acceptance test has to be
carried out by an authorized technician because
the modifications may have adversely affected
the response time of the brake system. Modifica-
tions in the brake system could result in non-
compliance to FMVSS 121 and CMVSS 121.
Changes could also affect stopping distance
and/or vehicle stability and should be avoided.
1.11.5 Welding operations
See also Section 10.9 Welding on the frame, page 278.
In the case of welding operations especially with electric welding units,
observe the following:
•
Only qualified personnel may carry out welding operations on the
chassis.
•
Disconnect the positive and negative battery terminals and
cover them (for protection).
•
Short-circuit the positive and negative connecting cable
af-
ter disconnecting from the battery
(to protect the vehicle
electronic).
•
Short-circuit the ground terminal and the vehicle frame
(vehicle frame is ground free during regular operation!)
•
Connect the welding unit's ground terminal directly to the
part to be welded.
•
Under no circumstances must the welding current be
routed via electronic components.
Caution:
Do not connect the welding unit's ground termi-
nal to components such as engine, transmission,
axles etc.
•
Do not touch the housing of electronic components (e.g.
control units) or electric cables with the welding electrode
or ground terminal of the welding unit.
•
Prior to welding, cover or remove springs and shock ab-
sorbers to protect them from welding splatter. Do not touch
springs with welding electrodes or welding tongs.
•
Prior to welding, cover or remove plastic lines and electric
cables to protect them.
•
Prior to welding, the plugs of the engine control unit must
be unplugged to avoid damage to the electronic control
unit (ECU). The plugs are located on the left hand side of
the engine (seen in direction of travel; see Figure 1.2).
The
ECU should be unplugged carefully in order to avoid
plug damages.
o
Removal of the first plug: Fold down the circlip and
pull the plug out straight.
o
Removal of the second plug: Press the yellow re-
lease button down and push the plug upwards.
