Novell NetWare 386 Disk Duplexing
Duplexing is a feature supported by Novell NetWare 386 to protect data against the
failure of a hard disk or a hard disk controller by allowing two controllers to be
installed in the system. NetWare 386 provides the capability to duplicate disks on
one controller with disks on another controller. Currently, Novell claims that
COMPAQ is the only known vendor that supports a secondary controller and
drive(s). UltraStor allows any IBM compatible computer to support disk subsystem
duplexing under Novell. The ULTRA family of ESDI controllers has been tested and
approved by Novell for disk duplexing; please refer to Novell IMSP Level 1 Disk
Driver Bulletin #D-97, available upon request.
UltraStor’s ULTRA 12F24 and 12C ESDI disk controllers are currently the only
controllers in the market that support NetWare 386 disk duplexing in any 386 AT
compatible system. With two ULTRA controllers co-residing in the same system, one
in the primary port, the other in the secondary port, the system can support up to 4
ESDI drives operating under NetWare 386. Any pair of disk drives can be selected as
a mirroring or duplexing pair as long as the drive pair capacity is close or similar (as
recommended by Novell documentation).
This application note describes the setup procedure for running the Novell NetWare
386 disk duplexing feature using two UltraStor ULTRA ESDI disk controllers with
Firmware revision 28001-007 and BIOS revision 38001-007 or higher. If you are
installing NetWare 386 Version 3.1, please modify the ISADISK.DSK file as detailed
at the end of this appendix before you start the installation.
Controller and Drive Preparation
1. Follow Controller Jumper Setting and Drive Preparation as outlined in
Appendix Reference I.
2. Create a small bootable DOS partition of approximately 2MBytes in the
first drive of the primary controller (by using FDISK and FORMAT
command in the DOS.)
3. The system is ready for installing Novell.
Novell NetWare 386 Installation:
1. Copy all the files in the Novell NetWare 386 "SYSTEM" diskette onto
drive C. (Some of the files may not be needed for installation, refer to
Novell NetWare 386 installation guide)
