AppleTalk Network Configuration
•
The Appletalk broadcast name and default zone name can be
configured via the print server console, which can be accessed via the
serial port, NCP, TELNET, XConfig or WebXAdmin.
Note
:
A free unsupported version of TELNET is available on the FTP
site (ftp.ncsa.edu/Mac/Telnet) of the National Center for
Supercomputer Applications (NCSA). This telnet requires Mac TCP,
which is standard with all new versions of Mac OS.
Setting up Printing:
1. At a Macintosh workstation, from the Apple menu, open the Chooser.
2. If the Chooser window displays an AppleTalk zone list, select the
necessary zone.
3. Click on the LaserWriter icon.
4. Select the print server name (it will appear as _
xxxxxx
_P1_AT).
5. Close the Chooser. You can now print to the printer using any standard
Macintosh application program.
Important Notes:
•
If you are printing binary AppleTalk jobs(for example, from Adobe
Photoshop, QuarkXpress, or other graphics programs) through an
external print server, your printer must support the HP Tagged Binary
Communications Protocol. Newer TROY print servers have this
protocol enabled by default (refer to Chapter 6 of the Administrator’s
Manual for details).
•
AppleTalk requires bidirectional communications. If you are using an
older printer, you may need to enable AppleTalk spoofing via XAdmin,
WebXAdmin, or the print server console (refer to Chapter 6 in the
Administrator’s Manual for more details).
