5.6 Choice of batteries
For reasons of efficiency and user-friendliness, Torqeedo recommends the use of
two Power 48-5000 batteries. Other batteries, such as lead or lithium from other
manufacturers, should only be connected to the Cruise system by experts.
WARNING!
Danger of injury from batteries which are unmatched.
This can result in severe physical injuries or death.
■
Connect only identical batteries (manufacturer, capacity and age).
■
Connect batteries only if they have an identical state of charge.
WARNING!
Danger of injury from short circuit.
This can result in severe physical injuries or death.
■
Remove metal jewellery and wristwatches before you start work on batteries
or in their vicinity.
■
Always put down tools and metal objects without making contact with the
battery.
■
When connecting the battery, ensure correct polarity and secure
connections.
■
Battery terminals must be clean and free of corrosion.
■
Do not store batteries hazardously in a box or drawer, e.g. an insufficiently
ventilated locker.
CAUTION!
Damage to the battery or other electrical loads from a short circuit.
Material damage can result.
■
When working on the batteries, always switch the system off at the main
switch.
■
When connecting the batteries, ensure that you first connect the red positive
cable followed by the black negative cable.
■
When disconnecting the batteries, ensure that you first disconnect the black
negative cable followed by the red positive cable.
■
Never transpose the polarities.
ADVICE
Do not lead the cables over sharp edges, and cover all open terminal caps.
5.6.1 Comments on choice of batteries
In principle, Torqeedo recommends the use of lithium batteries.
When using lead batteries, comply with the following:
■
Under no circumstances use starter batteries, because when deeply discharged
these become permanently damaged after only a few cycles.
■
If lead batteries are to be used, then so-called traction batteries (deep cycle) are
recommended. These batteries are designed for an average discharge level of
80 % per cycle.
■
So-called marine batteries can also be used. For these battery types, the charge
level should not fall below 50 %. Batteries of at least 400 Ah hours capacity are
therefore recommended.
