Chapter 12 PACTOR Operation
After you type your response, enter a
CTRL+Z
. This command changes control of the link back to the other
station...and this is how the conversation goes, changing control of the link back and forth until your conversation is
finished.
Ending a QSO
The station that has control of the link is the one that normally ends the conversation. If you have control of the link,
you might end it like this:
Thanks again, Monroe---see ya later! DE KB6IUX SK (CTRL+D)
*** DISCONNECTED: (callsign)
Entering
CTRL+D
breaks the contact and puts you in back into STBY RCVE mode. From here, you can go ahead
and initiate a contact with another station or wait for a station to connect to you. Remember, though, that you won’t
be able to monitor other stations’ PACTOR transmissions unless you enter
PTL
.
Seizing the Link
If the other station has the link and is sending a message to you, but you have to interrupt to tell him something—
like you might in Morse QSK (quick break-in.)—you can do that in PACTOR by entering
(CTRL+C) ACHG
(RETURN) (text)
. The
(CTRL+C) ACHG (RETURN)
commands cause the link to come back under your control
and puts the other station in receive. The text is optional; after you type it in, you can hand back control of the link
to the other station by entering a (
CTRL+Z)
.
Killing the Link
If, while the other station has control of the link, you have to end the conversation immediately, you can do so by
entering
(CTRL+C) R (RETURN)
.
This will put you into STBY RCVE mode. If there are characters left in the
transmit buffer, they won’t be sent.
Bailing out like this isn’t a recommended procedure since it leaves the other station “holding the bag”—he won’t
know that you left until his software timer “times out” waiting for an acknowledgement signal from you that will
never come. A “graceful” way of performing the same function is
(CTRL+C) ACHG (CTRL+D)
or
(CTRL+C)
ACHG (CTRL+C) D (RETURN)
.
LED Status and mode Indicators
The front panel LED display provides mode and status information at a glance. This is especially useful in
PACTOR operation. The following describe typical STATUS indications you will see.
See Table 1 for the light patterns you’ll see when you operate your DSP in its different PACTOR modes.
File Transfers
To send or receive ASCII, text and binary files with your program, set
8BITCONV
to
ON
,
AFILTER
to
OFF
, and
MFILTER
$00
(this allows all the control and graphics characters to be monitored/sent.). Consult your program’s
operating manual for the commands or keystrokes to send or receive files.
MailDrop Operation
One of the unique features of the DSP-232 is that it allows PACTOR as well as Packet and AMTOR access to its
MailDrop; messages can be dropped off and picked up in any combination of these modes as long as your mode
(Pactor, PACTOR, RTTY, etc.) matches the calling station’s. Make sure that you understand Chapter 7: MailDrop
Operation and the basic PACTOR operation described earlier in this chapter before putting your PACTOR
MailDrop on the air.
The
TMAIL
command controls other stations’ access to your PACTOR and AMTOR MailDrop in the same way that
the
MAILDROP
command controls Packet access. See
TMAIL
for more information about MailDrop accessibility.
