Loop
When Wavetable sounds are being reproduced, the middle part of the sound is reproduced as a loop so that the length of the
sound can be extended indefinitely.
Main Processor
CPU, central unit of the computer.
MCI
Media Control Interface. A software interface used for addressing various media devices. This device-independent interface
presents commands with which the device drivers can be accessed indirectly from a program or a multimedia application.
Microsoft Sound System
A package consisting of a soundcard and various applications programs which used to be manufactured by Microsoft. The 16-
bit soundcard used special resources which have now become standard particularly under Windows. Some games now also
use the MSS for sound output.
MIDI
Musical Instruments Digital Interface. This interface originates from the field of electronic musical instruments, and permits
standardised exchange of data between synthesizers, computers, samplers and keyboards. As this is normally a serial interface,
it generally only transmits control data which are designed to ensure that the sound-generating MIDI devices reproduce
music in a desired form (it is frequently successful in this respect).
MIDI Kit
A special connecting cable between the game/MIDI port and MIDI devices which contains additional electronics designed to
correspond to the MIDI standard on the one hand and the joystick port on the other.
MIDI Keyboard
A control keyboard for controlling MIDI sound generators.
Motherboard
Large circuit board on which the main components of a computer are installed, such as the power supply, CPU, RAM, BIOS,
bus system and expansion slots.
MPC
Hardware standard for PCs designed to meet certain minimum requirements for operating multimedia applications.
MPEG
Motion Picture Expert Group. A body responsible for developing standards for digitising moving images, generally films. Films
which are distributed nowadays on video CDs are compressed in accordance with the MPEG-1 standard.
MPU-401
Hardware interface developed by Roland for MIDI control of a PC. This interface is nowadays a necessary standard for
reproducing GM music for DOS games, as it is directly accessed by the games.
MT32
A MIDI instrument developed by Roland which was used as the standard instrument for MIDI reproduction of many games
before the introduction of the GM standard. This sound generator is nowadays no longer very common.
Multimedia PC
MPC, hardware standard for PCs designed to meet certain minimum requirements for operating multimedia applications.
Operating System
Level superior to BIOS for communication with the computer. The operating system provides the user with basic functions so
that job procedures on the computer can be organised. It forms the interface between BIOS and the applications.
PCI
Peripheral Component Interconnect. Bus system for rapid data transfer between the processor and expansion cards. The bus
rate is 33 MHz with 32- or 64-bit data blocks.
Plug and Play
A standard developed by Microsoft and Intel designed to ensure that the system resources are distributed automatically in an
optimum manner and without any conflict when the computer is booted. This involves additional work for the hardware
manufacturer to notify the system of what resources are available.
PnP
Plug and Play
Resources
Quantity and type of data lines and size of memory areas used by the system and the expansion boards.
