CD-ROM
Memory medium using the same technology as audio CDs. The difference is seen in the structure of the data; in the case of CD-
ROM, the data can only be accessed by a computer and not by a CD player.
Chip
Term used for describing integrated circuits (ICs).
CODEC
Designation of an integrated circuit responsible for analog-digital conversion (coding) as well as digital-analog conversion
(decoding).
Configuration Files
The startfiles CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, as well as the initialising files SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI in Windows 3.x are the
files which configure the computer and the software by means of drivers.
Controller
Subprocessor responsible for control between various interfaces and the bus. The most common controllers are those used
for the SCSI interface and the enhanced-IDE interface.
CPU
Central Processing Unit, the computer’s main processor.
Creative Labs
Manufacturer of the soundcards Soundblaster and Soundblaster Pro, which games manufacturers frequently consider to be
the de facto standard.
DAC
Digital Analog Converter, module for converting digital data into analog data.
digital
Method of displaying statuses by means of phased figures. A status change can only take place in stages, whereby the scanning
rate and the resolution are responsible for the size of the stages. A computer is only able to process digital (i.e. rough)
information, although it can do so very quickly.
Direct Memory Access
Direct access to RAM bypassing the main processor.
DMA
Direct Memory Access
DMA Channels
Signal lines which are presented for direct memory access.
Double Speed
CD-ROM drives running at twice the speed of audio-CD players. This results in a higher data transmission rate from the CD-
ROM. Modern CD-ROM drives can achieve speeds of up to 8 times that of audio-CD players.
download
The process of loading files from one computer, in general a BBS or a network server to your own computer.
Driver
Software which connects the operating system and the hardware. It is responsible for setting the resources and initialising the
hardware. There are different drivers for different operating systems.
Drumkit
Group of percussion instruments tuned to each other.
Dual-DMA
Two separate DMA channels used for simultaneously recording and playing back audio data in a computer. This mode is also
known as Full Duplex, and is significant for hard disk recording and acoustic data transmission via telephone and network
lines.
dynamic Microphone
Principle of an acoustic convertor, which uses a thin membrane to convert soundwaves into electrical voltage by means of a
thin wire coil which moves inside a magnet.
Enhanced Full Duplex
This enables different sampling frequences to be used for the two modes while audio data are being recorded and played back
at the same time.
