THE SWEEPING PROCEDURE
Always observe the safety regulations and measures described in § 2.2, § 2.4 and §
2.7.
Sweeper vehicles are mainly used to clean public roads. The type of rubbish usually consists of
litter, sand, grit and leaves. The dust that develops during sweeping is settled by continuously
spraying it with water.
The quality of the sweeping results is largely determined by the adjustments and settings. The
adjustment of the brushes depends on various factors (see also § 9.2.2 and § 9.2.3). When selecting
the driving speed and the brush speed, prevailing conditions should be taken into account.
The joystick control of the sweeping unit and the wide steering angle make the vehicle highly
manoeuvrable during the sweeping procedure. Always adapt the manoeuvring to the prevailing
conditions.
In due course, the operator will become sufficiently experienced to assess the conditions accurately
and adapt the sweeping techniques accordingly.
5.1.
Sweeping conditions
The settings of vehicle's functions must be based on prevailing conditions. These settings can be
adjusted while sweeping, as long as the vehicle and the sweeping procedure remain under control
and the operator's attention is not distracted from the traffic.
Adjustment of the sweeping unit and/or third brush must always be done very
carefully.
No obstacles or people may be within the danger zone.
Road speed
While sweeping, the road speed must be adapted to the prevailing conditions. A maximum speed of
7 km/h is recommended. During sweeping the vehicle is set to a maximum speed of ± 12 km/h
forward and ± 8 km/h in reverse.
The engine speed during sweeping is set by means of the speed regulator “engine speed / fan” at the
top of the dashboard next to the MFA master instrument (fig. 6). The accelerator pedal therefore
only influences the driving speed.
Only during sweeping the separate reverse pedal (optional) to the left of the steering column (fig. 1,
no. 3), can be used to reverse. This pedal works independently of the forward / reverse selector. As
long as the pedal is depressed, the vehicle reverses.
A sudden switch to reverse at normal sweeping speed could cause hazard to traffic
approaching from the rear.
