C alibrator
The internal ca lib ra to r o f the 43 4 provides a convenient
signal fo r checking vertical gain. The c a lib ra to r o u tp u t
signal available at the front-panel PROBE C A L 0.6 V 1 kH z
jack is also very useful fo r checking and adjusting probe
com pensation as described in the probe in s tru c tio n manual.
S IM P L IF IE D O P E R A T IN G IN STR U C TIO N S
General
The fo llo w in g operating instru ctio n s w ill a llo w cali
brated measurements in m ost applications. The operator
should be fa m ilia r w ith the com plete fu n c tio n and opera
tio n o f the in stru m e n t as described in this section before
using this procedure.
Norm al Sweep Display
1.
Set the in p u t co upling switches to A C , the V ariable
V O L T S /D IV c o n tro ls to th e ir de te n t positions, and the
V e rtica l Mode switch to CH 1 (use A L T or CHOP fo r
dual-trace display).
2.
Set th e sweep M O DE switch to A U T O , the T R IG G E R
SLOPE sw itch to +, th e T R IG G E R C O U P LIN G sw itch to
A C , and th e T R IG G E R SOURCE sw itch to COMP.
3.
Set the T IM E /D IV sw itch to 1 mS./DIV and the V A R
T IM E /D IV c o n tro l to its calibrated p o sitio n.
4,
Set the POWER sw itch to the on p o sitio n and allow
several m inutes w arm up.
5. C onnect a signal to the CH 1 in p u t connector.
6.
Advance the IN T E N S IT Y c o n tro l u n til the display is
visible (if the display is n o t visible w ith the IN T E N S IT Y
c o n tro l at m idrange, press the BEAM F IN D E R b u tto n and
adjust the V O L T S /D IV sw itch u n til the display is reduced
in size v e rtic a lly ; then center the compressed display w ith
the vertical and h o rizo n ta l PO SITIO N co n tro ls; release the
BEAM F IN D E R b u tto n ).

PO SITIO N c o n tro l fo r a display w hich remains w ith in the
display area v e rtic a lly .
8. Set th e T R IG G E R L E V E L c o n tro l fo r a stable dis
play.

Magnified Sweep Display
1. F o llo w steps 1-9 fo r norm al sweep.
2.
A d ju s t the h o rizo n ta l PO SITIO N c o n tro l to move the
area to be m agnified to w ith in the center h o rizo n ta l
divisio n o f the graticule. There should be equal amounts o f
the area o f interest on e ith e r side of the center graticule
line. If necessary, change the setting o f the T IM E /D IV
sw itch and the PO SITIO N co n tro l to o b ta in the desired
display.
3.
Push in and tu rn the V O L T S /D IV knob to achieve the
desired a m o u n t o f m agn ifica tio n . The po sitio n o f the
T IM E /D IV knob indicates d ire c tly the m agnified tim e /d iv .
A d ju s t the h o rizo n ta l PO SITIO N c o n tro l fo r precise
po sitio nin g o f the m agnified display.
External H orizontal Display
1.
Set the IN T E N S IT Y c o n tro l fu lly counterclockw ise.
2.
Set the In p u t C oupling switches to AC and the
Variable V O L T S /D IV c o n tro ls to th e ir d e te n t positions.
3.
Set the T IM E /D IV switch to E X T H O R IZ , the
V e rtica l Mode switch to CH 1, and the Sweep MODE to
A U T O .
4.
Set the POWER switch to the on po sitio n and allow
several m inutes w arm up.
5.
C onnect the X (h o rizo n tal) signal to the E XT H O R IZ
in p u t connector on the in stru m e n t rear panel and the Y
(vertical) signal to the CH 1 in p u t connector.
6.
Advance the IN T E N S IT Y co n tro l u n til the display is
visible (if display is n o t visible, push the B EA M FIN D E R
b u tto n and adjust the CH 1 V O L T S /D IV sw itch u n til the
display
is
reduced
in size v e rtic a lly ; the h o rizo n ta l
d e fle c tio n can o n ly be changed by changing the am plitude
o f the signal applied to the E X T H O R IZ in p u t connector
(sensitivity
is
^O .B
v o lt/'d iv is io n );
then
center
the
compressed display w ith the CH 1 and the h o rizo n ta l
