General
T o e ffe c tiv e ly use the 4 3 4 O scilloscope, the o p e ra tio n
and ca p a b ilitie s o f th e in s tru m e n t m u st be k n o w n . T h is
section describes th e o p e ra tio n o f fro n t-p a n e l c o n tro ls ,
gives s im p lifie d and general o p e ra tin g in fo rm a tio n , and lists
some basic a p p lic a tio n s fo r th is in s tru m e n t.
O P E R A T IN G V O L T A G E
General
The 4 3 4 can be operated on all n o m in a l lin e voltages
fro m 100 vo lts to 2 4 0 vo lts A C , 50 to 4 0 0 h ertz. It can also
be operated fro m a 100 vo lts to 2 5 0 v o lts DC p o w e r source.
N o range sw itc h in g o r selection is necessary.

(g ro u n d) p o te n tia l (fo r b o th A C a n d D C p o w e r
sources) w ith a separate sa fe ty-e a rth c o n d u c to r. I t is
n o t in te n d e d fo r o p e ra tio n fro m tw o phases o f a
m u lti-p h a se A C system , o r across the legs o f a
single-phase, three-w ire A C system .
The 4 3 4 is designed to be used w ith a th re e -w ire A C
pow er system . I f a three- to tw o -w ire adapter is used to
co n n e c t th is in s tru m e n t to a tw o -w ire A C pow er system , be
sure to co n n e c t th e g ro u n d lead o f th e adapter to earth
(g ro u n d). F a ilu re to co m p le te the g ro u n d system m ay a llo w
th e chassis o f th is in s tru m e n t to be elevated above gro u n d
p o te n tia l and pose a shock hazard.
W hen o p e ra tin g th e in s tru m e n t fro m an e x te rn a l DC
pow er
source,
p o la rity
o f
the
external
voltage
is
u n im p o rta n t. A g a in , i t is im p e ra tive to c o m p le te th e g ro u n d
system to p re ve n t accidental elevation o f th e in s tru m e n t
chassis and re s u lta n t shock hazard.
O perating T em perature
The 4 3 4 requires very little air c irc u la tio n fo r p ro p e r
o p e ra tio n . A th e rm a l c u to u t in th e in s tru m e n t provides
th e rm a l p ro te c tio n and disconnects the in s tru m e n t p o w e r if
th e in te rn a l te m p e ra tu re exceeds a safe o p e ra tin g level.
Power is a u to m a tic a lly restored w hen the te m p e ra tu re
re tu rn s to a safe level.
T h e 4 3 4 can be operated w here the a m b ie n t te m p e ra tu re
is betw een —15c C and + 5 5 °C . The m a x im u m opera tin g
te m p e ra tu re m u s t be derated 1°C fo r each 1000 fe e t o f
a ltitu d e above 5 000 fe e t. T h is in s tru m e n t can be stored in
a m b ie n t tem peratures betw een —55°C and + 7 5 "C . A fte r
storage a t tem peratures beyond th e o p e ra tin g lim its , a llo w
the chassis te m p e ra tu re to com e w ith in th e o p e ra tin g lim its
before p o w e r is a pplied.
O perating P osition
T h e handle o f the 4 3 4 can be p o sitio n e d fo r ca rryin g or
as a tilt-s ta n d fo r the in s tru m e n t. T o p o s itio n th e handle,
press in at b o th p iv o t p o in ts (see Fig. 2-1) and tu rn the
handle to th e desired p o s itio n . F o u rte e n p o sitio n s are
p ro vid e d fo r c o n v e n ie n t c a rry in g o r v ie w in g . The in s tru
m e n t can also be set on th e rear fe e t fo r e ith e r o p e ra tio n o r
storage.
