TROUBLESHOOTING
Maxitrol GV60
Pilot stops sparking
and receiver makes
several beeps.
1.) Check for a loose or poor connection at valve ground lug. (See Diagram 8
for location) Set meter to Resistance in the lowest range available and test
between the valve ground lug & Yellow terminal on 5 wire connector (See
Diagram 8a). If open circuit or over 60 milliohms resistance remove valve
ground lug screw, lightly sand both points of contact , re-assemble and test
again.

No
Ignition spark heard
“snapping” but no
spark at pilot hood.
Yes
1.) Ensure spark electrode is connected and fully seated to the “Spark”
terminal on the receiver. If not, connect and test again.
2.) Inspect spark electrode wire for breaks in the insulating jacket that
would allow it to spark early. If damage found replace spark
electrode and test again.
3.) Inspect ceramic insulator around spark end of electrode. Electrode
should not be able to move or spin, ceramic should be free of
breaks, cracks or splits. If rod can move or ceramic damaged,
replace electrode and test again.
4.) Test spark electrode for continuity. Set meter to resistance in the
lowest range available, place one probe on spark end of electrode
and other probe to socket end. If no continuity or high resistance
replace spark electrode and test again. (See Diagram 9)
5.) Remove spark electrode from receiver. Attach a jumper to the
“Spark” terminal on the receiver and hold other end of jumper 1/8”
away from ground and turn unit on. (See Diagram 12) Should
spark to ground. If no spark, and power is available at receiver
(Diagram 1b) replace receiver.
No
Pilot lights
but
will not
hold. Drops out in
10 – 30 seconds.
1.) Test Thermocouple output. Set meter to mV DC and light pilot (To
operate valve manually
—s
ee diagram 5) Place (+) probe on Red
spade
connector
at interrupter block. Place (–) probe to ground.
Should read 10 – 15mV DC (See Diagram 10). If low, ensure pilot
flame is making good contact with thermocouple. If under 10 mV
replace thermocouple. Note result.
2.) If thermocouple output tests OK check voltage drop between Red
and Black spade connectors at Interrupter block. With pilot lit
(See Diagram 4— for manual operation) set meter to mV DC and
place (+) probe on Black spade connector, (-) probe to ground and
note result. Subtract reading at Black spade connecter from
reading at Red spade connector (Test 1.) Difference should be 4 –
6mV. If greater check thermocouple and interrupter block for
damage. Reposition or replace components if damaged.
3.) Check receiver ground for poor connection. (See Diagram 8) Set
meter to Resistance in the Milliohm range. At 8 wires “umbilical”
cord place + positive probe to Yellow wire terminal and – negative
probe to ground. Should be 60 Milliohms or less. If greater
remove valve ground lug (T20), lightly sand both sides,
re-assemble and test again.
