PSE Conformance Tests – Power-Down Characteristics
pwrdn_overld
Determine overload acceptance time for specified overload value
Icut
Current level at which power is removed because of
overload condition
310 to 400 mA

Parameters
Tovld
Time to remove power following overload condition

Classification
Description
Test accepts a user input classification value for power-up. Default is Class 0. Various overload
current transients are then applied to determine the PSE load current threshold where overload is
determined (given selected classification). The time to power-removal from overload condition is
then measured using a load slightly higher than the Icut measured.

Description
This test evaluates the time for the power-down transition to occur. The test models a 320 K
Ω
load
resistance to all PSE port types (AC MPS, DC MPS) during the power-down transition. This is done
mathematically by combining timing of shutdowns with high impedance and fixed current loads.
Power down slew rate given the small DC load current is also utilized to assess PSE port
capacitance Cout. Cout is then used to assess Rp from the voltage decay characteristics of the PSE
port during shutdown with high impedance. Known characteristics of the PSA test port are factored
into the various calculations for Toff, Cout, and Rp. As with the Zout measurement in det_rsource,
the Rp result here is only an indicator of a possible problem where reverse input impedance to the
port falls in a band where it could be detected as a PD by another PSE port. This might especially
be true if both Zout and Rp are below the 45 K
Ω
limit both values are comparable. Test adapts to
PSE’s that actively remove charge during a disconnect shutdown by reporting Cout = -1 since Cout
and Rp cannot be measured and Toff is very short because of the designed active discharge.
Trace Analysis
One load current trace is used to accurately assess the time-integrated value of the current pulse
used for the dV/dt measurement used to determine Cout.
