5. PSE Conformance Test Suite
5.1.
PSE Conformance Test Suite Overview
The PSE Conformance Test Suite for the PowerSync Analyzer is a suite of 802.3af and 802.3at specification
conformance tests that are designed to evaluate specific characteristics of conforming 802.3 power sourcing equipment
(PSE). The test suite runs over the PowerShell System API for the PowerSync Analyzer. The test suite may also be
accessed from PSA Interactive graphical user interface software for the PowerSync Analyzer.
Each test provided within the PSE Conformance Test Suite has been engineered to accommodate the generality
included within the 802.3 Power over Ethernet specification. As a specification, the 802.3af provides guidelines and
ranges for various signaling amplitudes and timing. However, it does not strictly describe all signals utilized in
detecting, classifying, and connection-checking thus placing burden on test methods to adapt to vendor-specific
implementations of the specification. Some PSE variants covered by the version
3.4 PSE Conformance Test Library
include various forms of pre-detection (pre-qualification), zero back-off / rapid back-off detection, and integrated
(interlaced) 802.3 and legacy detection schemes.
Furthermore, many PSE’s are consciously designed to provide coincidental support for both 802.3 and non-standardized
“legacy” mode Power Over Ethernet. The PSE Test Library has the ability to adapt to certain PSE’s that are operating
in a “hybrid” 802.3+legacy mode. While this mode is not strictly 802.3 compliant, the 802.3 components can still be
conformance tested using the PSE Conformance Test Suite.
The conformance tests that comprise the test library may be sequenced in arbitrary order on arbitrary groups of
PSE ports using the sequencing facilities described above in Sections
3.2.2
and
4.13
. The API command
psa_tests
will
return a list of PSE Conformance Tests in PowerShell.
It is strongly recommended that any devices connected to PSA Test Port “OUT” ports be removed before performing
PSE Conformance Tests. Certain PSE Conformance Test parameters can be affected by interactions between PSE port
signaling and EMI terminations found on many LAN ports that were not designed for PoE compatibility. Generally,
Sifos Technologies does not recommend performing PSE Conformance Tests simultaneously with LAN data traffic
because PSE Conformance Testing requires many PoE power cycles that will most likely disrupt that LAN data traffic
severely.
5.2.
Global PSE Description Parameters
The
PSE Conformance Test Suite
has been designed to accept several “global” parameters that describe each PSE
port. Using this information, the test library automatically adapts and optimizes testing for accuracy and speed.

over ports that might support both modes.
