Calibration Examples

13.1 Known-Load Calibration Example

13.1.1 Introduction

When calibrating a PIM-3 to a particular transducer, it

is important that the command codes are sent in the
proper order to obtain maximum system accuracy. This
section will provide a detailed example of PIM-3 calibra-
tion by applying a known load to the transducer to which
the PIM-3 is connected.

13.1.2 Requirements

The following equipment and information is required

for proper calibration of a Model PIM-3 to a transducer:

•

Model PIM-3 Digital Inline Amplifier.

•

12 - 28 volt DC power supply, to power the PIM-3.

•

Communications terminal, or a personal computer
running a terminal emulation program.

•

Transducer to which the PIM-3 is to be calibrated.

•

The full-scale millivolt per volt (mV/V) ("calibra-
tion factor") value, and the excitation voltage for the
transducer must be known.

•

A means of removing all load from the transducer,
and of applying the desired full-scale load to the
transducer.

13.1.3 Calibration Example

Assume that a Model PIM-3 has been properly wired

to its power supply, transducer, and communications ter-
minal. It is to be calibrated to a load cell such that the full
scale output from the PIM-3 will read out at 150 pounds.
