Activity 5 - Search and Rescue
The RNLI PS1 stretcher
To use the PS1 stretcher, unroll it and roll it back on itself
once, so when unrolled again it will lie flat. Place the
stretcher alongside the casualty.
A casualty can be placed in the PS1 stretcher with a
survivors lifejacket fitted and then swum/towed to
the lifeboat. This can be done by clipping the lifejacket
lifeline into the black tape loop from the top eye of the
PS1 stretcher.
Casualties can also be put on the stretcher in the water, (as
long as the sea is calm enough), and a lifejacket is fitted
first. This would be ideal for spinal casualty recovery in
calm water.
The RNLI PS1 stretcher can be used in the
following circumstances:
• extracting a casualty from a confined space
• lifting a casualty vertically
• dragging across sand, grass or small rocks
• extracting a casualty from water, or swimming them
out to the lifeboat (as long as the casualty is wearing
a lifejacket).
The images below illustrate how the straps of the PS1
stretcher should be used to secure the casualty. They also
show the two different way to place the casualty.
Safety considerations
To use the PS1 stretcher safely:
• NEVER lift from the ends of the stretcher
• ensure the straps are secure before lifting - check that
the casualty can breathe
• place it into the helicopter stretcher if an airlift
is required
• be aware the weight limit of the stretcher is
200 kg (31.5st).
The casualty should be placed in the bow of the Atlantic
85. The casualty’s head can be placed forward or aft
depending on ease of the recovery of the casualty and
weather conditions pending.
NOTE
NEVER attempt to lift or suspend the PS1 stretcher
from the ends.
