Activity 4 - SAR Unit Handling and Seamanship
Underway/formatting transfer
Before formatting up with a helicopter, all crew must be
aware of the no-go areas beneath the helicopter.
Do not position a vessel in any one of the following areas:
Area 1: In front of the helicopter – if for any reason the
helicopter loses power it will dive into this area to gain
speed in order to generate lift.
Area 2: To port of the helicopter – in the event of a major
engine failure the pilot will always aim to ditch to port.
Area 3: To the rear of the helicopter – the downdraught
will produce a great deal of spray and reduce visibility. It
should be noted that the position of the downdraught
will move backward or forward relative to the aircraft
depending on the helicopter’s speed.
The start position will be to the starboard side of the
helicopter. In this position, the helm will experience exactly
the same sea conditions as when under the helicopter and
can therefore ask the pilot to adjust their speed in order to:
• reduce slamming
• maintain steerage.
The ILB should remain clear of the winching to reduce
the chance of the winchman falling into the boat or
being run over should the cable break. The vessel
should remain clear of the winching position until the
winchman is lowered to approximately 2 metres above
the sea.
The helm should then move the vessel into the winching
position directly under the helicopter.
Whilst under the helicopter, the helm will be looking
upwards fixing on the helicopter itself and not looking
ahead or at the winchman.

Safe approach
area
Due to this, it is essential that crew 2 concentrates on the
winchman while crew 3 looks ahead for any obstructions
in the water. Any hazards or concerns seen by the crew
should be directed via the intercom to the helm for
consideration. It is important that in the brief, prior to the
helicopter arriving, these roles are clearly defined and a
signal for communication failure determined. For example
if crew 3 sees an object in the water a tap on the shoulder
of the helm maybe required if communications are failing
due to noise.
The Hi-line is not to be used when making way in
any circumstances.
WARNING
1. BE AWARE high levels of downdraft may cause
debris and unsecured objects to be propelled.
2. DO NOT approach casualty if a helicopter is
on scene. First establish communication and
then agree plan with the pilot before entering
the operation area
DANGER
1. DO NOT touch the static discharge
line prior to earthing, the static charge could
cause death or severe injury.
2. DO NOT use pyrotechnics at night if a
helicopter is involved in the operation.
3. DO NOT secure the hi-line to any part of
the lifeboat.
