Activity 11 - Unplanned Maintenance
Yamaha F115 outboard engine
Due to the complexity of the Yamaha F115 (OE 26)
and F115A (OE 33) outboard engines, particularly with
respect to the electronics, it may be necessary to have
a laptop loaded with the Yamaha diagnostic program to
fully diagnose a problem. A suitable laptop is held at all
Divisional Bases, so they will need to be contacted. The
diagnostic program reads the information retained in the
engine control unit (ECU). Various fault codes will indicate
the signals being received by the ECU, which may point
towards the component(s) that may be defective.
If the measuring of specific electrical outputs is required,
then the Yamaha service manual will be needed. However
some basics for fault finding still apply.
NOTE
For all unplanned maintenance, you need to raise a
‘maintenance request’ through AX .This will then be
sent to the divisional maintenance manager.
Engine will not start
Basic fault finding
The operator should be aware of what is classed as ‘normal’
running conditions when the outboard engines are
running. They should be familiar with the sounds, smells
and visual aspects of the running engines, the appearance
of the tell tale, etc. When the engines won’t start, do
the following:
• Check the batteries are fully charged.
• Check all electrical connections are made and in
good condition.
• Check that sufficient fuel is available.
• Check that the engine is free from any hull and
rigging problems.
Intermediate fault finding
• Check the starter motor.
If the poly switch is not illuminated when the vessel is in
an emergency situation it can be bypassed using the 1,2,3
procedure.
1, 2, 3 Procedure
Follow the instructions on the tags attached to the three
connectors when trying to bypass the poly switch.
• Check fuel supply.
• Check fuel filters. Engine and boat
(drain water from primary filter).
• Check fuel system for leak.
• Check fuel pumps.
• Check ignition system – spark plugs.
Check all Polyswitch LEDs are lit and cranking light has
comes on.
