B Class Atlantic 85 Manual – First Issue, June 2017

Activity 11 - Unplanned Maintenance

Tube repair procedure

Before commencing the repair, ensure the environment is

dry and warm or temperature and humidity controlled.
• Using hot air gun, crepe rubber, 501 solvent, pincers,

scraper and emery cloth remove old glue and prepare

surface for new patch.

• Mark out new fitting or patch with chinagraph pencil.

Cut out suitable size patch (allow 50-75mm overlap)

and round off corners.

•  Key both mating surfaces by abrading with sandpaper.
•  Wipe areas with 501 solvent to remove dust and dirt.
•  Ensure two part adhesive is in date for use and mix

together thoroughly.

•  Apply glue thinly and evenly to both surfaces.
•  Leave for a minimum of 20 minutes or until tacky.
•  Apply a second coat of glue on both surfaces.
•  Leave for 5-10 minutes until touch dry.
•  Bond the patch to the sponson avoiding trapping air as

you do so.

• Roll well with a roller ensuring edges are

bonded together.

• Wipe over all areas with 501 solvent to remove pencil

marks and residual glue.

NOTE

The repair must be left for 24 hours to cure

before inflation and the glue will take a full 7 days

to cure properly.

Inflation valve repair procedure

Leafield manufacture the inflation valves fitted in the

sponson of the B-Class Atlantic 85 Lifeboat.

The valve should be kept clean using plenty of soapy

water. It is not possible to remove the inner workings of

the fitting for cleaning or replacing.

The outer part of the valve can be replaced if needed.

However, the section of sponson holding the valve will

need to be deflated as the inner part of the valve will drop

inside the sponson once the outer part is unscrewed.
