Activity 3 - Launch and Recovery
There are several forms of Launch and Recovery used for an
Atlantic 85 around the coast such as Bedstead, Hydrohoist
and DODO.
Before any form of launch the following must be
carried out:
• A full SMEAC briefing with all crew and shore crew.
• Is the weather within the operating capabilities of the
Atlantic 85? (e.g. Daylight hours – Force 7. Hours of
Darkness – Force 6).
• Is the launch site appropriate for the prevailing
circumstance and conditions?
• Authorisation from a launch authority (LOM or DLA).
• Navigation aids to be (radar, SIMS on and set up
correctly, charts).
In addition the following tasks may be completed by the
boat crew and/or shore crew before launch:
• Any hatches that were opened for ventilation/drying
out should be closed securely and all kit stowed
appropriately.
• The charger should be disconnected and equipment
not normally left on board returned to their respective
stowage on board i.e. handheld radio, salvage
pump etc.
• The battery isolators located underneath the helm seat
should be turned on.
• The fuel bulbs should be lightly primed to ensure there
is fuel in the system.
• When outside the boathouse, the mast and aerials
should be moved to their upright positions and secured
properly.
• If fitted, it may be prudent to switch on video recording
equipment at this point if time allows.
Before launch, the helm will ensure that the boat is ready
for sea, all necessary equipment is on board and that
the head launcher/banksman, launch vehicle driver and
marshals are ready (where appropriate).
