Section 2 : Configuration and Installation
2.1 : Overview
This section provides information for the unpacking, configuration, and installation of the Rigel
Engineering Model VP3500 6U VPX Carrier Card. To ensure product reliability, please take the time and
care necessary to properly unpack, inspect, and install this product.
The VP3500 is a standard 6U, single-slot, OpenVPX compliant, form factor printed circuit board that is
designed for installation into either a standard air-cooled or conduction-cooled VPX 6U enclosure. The
VP3500 must be installed into a peripheral/payload slot (not the system controller location).
2.2 : Unpacking
)
Important Note: This product is sensitive to electric static discharge (ESD). Precautions
MUST be taken to ensure that no damage occurs due to ESD by using a properly grounded
wrist strap whenever handling this or any Rigel Engineering product.
If the shipping carton appears to be damaged upon arrival, we strongly recommend that you request a
shipping agent to be present during the unpacking and inspection of the equipment.
First, carefully inspect all items for damage during shipping. If any of the products that you received are
damaged, immediately file a claim with the carrier and send a complete damage report, including action
taken, to Rigel Engineering support.
Verify that all items listed on the packing slip have been received in good condition.
2.3 : Card Identification
There are no jumpers that need to be configured on the VP3500. However, there are four header
locations that provide access to various signals and functionality. Some or all of these headers are not
populated, are only used for lab testing, or may be accessed on the rear transition module. Figure 6
identifies the card’s features.
2.4 : PMC/XMC/MiniPCIe Installation & Removal
)
The VP3500 is designed to host two single PMC/XMC Modules or one dual width PMC/XMC
Module. The PMC busses are PCI Revision 2.3 compliant, PCI-X 133MHz, 64-bit capable. The
slots support standard and conduction-cooled PMC or XMC modules.
The VP3500 PMC slots s3.3v signaling or universal PMC cards. The VP3500 PCI IO signaling
level is +3.3v. Damage may occur to the VP3500 if a PMC module 5v signal levels. Proper PMC
signal voltage keying is provided on the VP3500.
Each PMC module’s maximum current draw is limited by the PMC connector power pins and power
dissipation limits. Each pin is rated at .5A maximum. Using only that information, each PMC slot can
supply 4.5A on +3.3v, 3A on +5v and .5A each on +12v & -12v. However, a standard PMC card is limited
to power consumption of 7.5 watts (maximum recommended by IEEE P1386.1 per PMC slot). Each PMC
may derive its power from one or any combination of +3.3v or +5v.
