1.1 : Overview
Rigel’s VP3500 6U VPX carrier card presents system designers with the ability to incorporate a wide
variety of functionality to any 6U VPX system. The VP3500 features two PMC/XMC slots, two MiniPCIe
sockets, and an integrated 5-port Gigabit Ethernet switch (VITA 46.6). The VP3500 is available in various
ruggedization levels including commercial or extended temperature, air or conduction-cooled and rugged
versions for harsh environments.
The VP3500 was designed from the start with high-performance and complete flexibility in mind. The
VPX backplane switch interface consists of four Generation 2 PCIe FAT pipes (4x4 lanes - default) to
P1. The XMCs support eight lanes of PCIe, while each PMC slot is capable of PCI-X, 133MHz, 64-bit
performance. PMC and XMC rear IO routing is configurable, and adheres to VITA 46.9 (P64s to VPX P3/
P5 or X38s to P3/P5, X12d+X8d to P4/P6). A pluggable IO module allows the system designer to mix
and match the PMC or XMC selection and their IO requirements to the backplane. Additionally, the two
MiniPCIe sockets support Full-Mini or Half-Mini card form factors with front panel and rear IO routing
options.
The integrated 5-port Gigabit Ethernet switch may save a system chassis slot, as it can take the place
of a switch card in most applications. It adheres to VITA 46.6 for Gigabit Ethernet Control Plane on VPX
(two 1000BASE-T and 2x 1000BASE-BX ports to VPX P4). The fifth port is routed to VPX P6 (User IO),
and may be used externally as a maintenance port or simply as an additional GbE port.
