8.6 Lightning Protection
When installing the RT-800 (AU) at fixed coastal locations, precautions must be taken
regarding lightning protection.
For this reason, RHOTHETA Elektronik GmbH offers an optional Lightning Protection Rod
(LPR) for precision direction finders.
The Lightning Protection Rod is designed to protect the direction finder system from the
effects of direct lightning strokes.
Conventional lightning protection rods are simple metallic structures that have a great
influence on the direction finding accuracy due to reflected radio waves (like any other
metallic structure in proximity of the direction finder).
The RHOTHETA Lightning Protection Rod uses special technologies to reduce the
reflections. This decreases the effects of the protection rod on the bearing accuracy to an
acceptable level, but it does not completely eliminate any influence.
For detailed advice on mounting the Lightning Protection Rod please refer to the Installation
Manual of Lightning Protection Rod.
8.7 Antenna Alignment
Bearing values of RT-800 are always displayed and output
relatively
to the “North / 0°”
marking of the antenna unit (s. Fig. 175).
This implies that the north marking must be aligned to North in order to display absolute, north
related values.
