8.1 Introduction
The purpose of this chapter is to provide the operator with supplemental operat-
ing information without interrupting the normal flow of text in Chapter 3.
8.2
Depth Gates and the Head Tilt Function
8.2.1 Introduction
The Filters Menu item “Head Tilt” is used to identify a known port or starboard
offset resulting from either a deliberate or accidental mounting configuration of
the sonar head. Entering this offset value is required to guarantee that the depth
gates will work properly with this configuration.
8.2.2
A Brief Description of Depth Gates
The depth gates, with no input from a motion sensor, will orient themselves paral-
lel to the horizontal plane of the sonar head, as shown by the Min and MaxDepth
lines in Figure 28. In this series of illustrations, the bottom detect dots are shown
as a horizontal line (Line A or B) with dashed lines representing depth gates
above and below the bottom and no vessel roll present. Visualize the bottom as
being in the ‘layer’ formed by the depth gates.
