Appendix B – Scrolling Display Information
Section 1
– Sign Types
There are multiple type signs that are compatible with the iBOS
®
system. To identify which type of sign you
have: Type A or B see below.
The Scrolling Display is potentially the most confusing part of the iBOS
®
charger management system to
trouble shoot. The Scrolling Display continuously displays information even when it loses its connection
with the Control Box or if the Control Box stops working. This description of how it works and how it
communicates with the controller may help in understanding how to trouble shoot the system if there are
problems.
Each display is set to a
particular “channel”. So just like a television, each display will only display the
information that is broadcast on that channel. The sign ID is equivalent to the TV channel. The sign set to
ID 1 will display Pool 1 information. The sign set to ID 2 will display Pool 2 information etc. In section 5 of
this manual are instructions on how to set the sign ID on the Scrolling Display.
If there is a problem with the wiring to the Scrolling Display or if the Control Box stops working then the
Scrolling Display will not receive a sign update every 15 seconds. The Scrolling Display has a memory
buffer in it and it will keep displaying the message in the buffer over and over until another message is
received. The Scrolling Display can continue to show information even if the Control Box is disconnected.
The way you will know that the Scrolling Display is not receiving updates is that you will see the message
“***** SYSTEM FAULT ******” appear on the display following the normal message.
If the communication to the Control Box is lost (or the Control Box stops working) then you will start to see
the words “SYSTEM FAULT” come up after the normal communication. The Control Box loads a long
message that would take about 45 seconds to scroll across the display. But the message is interrupted
before it finishes. The first 15 seconds are the real message, for example “Take next REACH TRUCK
battery from charger 101”. The next 30 seconds of the message display “SYSTEM FAULT”. When things
are working correctly, the Control Box sends a new message every 15 seconds. This will always interrupt
the message just after the real message is displayed but before the “SYSTEM FAULT” portion. So under
normal circumstances the only thing that is displayed is the normal message.
Type A Scrolling Displays: Are labeled on the
back for use with “Use with 9 VAC”. Type A
signs also use a telephone cable (RJ11) for a
data connection.
Type B Scrolling Displays: Are labeled on the
side with “Use with 5 VDC”. Type B signs also
use a Cat 5 cable for data connection.
