Chapter 3
Connecting Your Local Network
In this chapter, you will learn how to physically connect the Netopia
ISDN Router to your local area network (LAN). Before you proceed,
make sure the Netopia ISDN Router is properly configured. You
should have configured the Router using Easy Setup or with custom
settings.
Overview
You can connect the Netopia ISDN Router to an IP or IPX network
that uses Ethernet. If you have a PC LAN using IP over Ethernet, you
can connect it to the Netopia ISDN Router’s Ethernet por t. You can
also connect the Router to an AppleTalk network that uses either
Ethernet or LocalTalk.
AppleTalk networks based on Ethernet cabling (EtherTalk) connect to
all models of the Router through their Ethernet por ts. Apple
Macintosh computers using native IP also connect to the Router’s
Ethernet por t.
AppleTalk networks based on LocalTalk cabling connect to the 400
series models through their LocalTalk por ts. If you have both kinds
of AppleTalk networks, you can connect one to the Netopia ISDN
Router’s LocalTalk por t and the other to its Ethernet por t. AppleTalk
traffic will be routed between these two networks.
Caution!
Before connecting the Netopia ISDN Router to any AppleTalk LANs
that contain other AppleTalk routers, you should read “Routers and
seeding” in
“AppleTalk Networks” on page 6-1.
See the sections later in this chapter for details on how to connect
the Netopia ISDN Router to the two types of networks.
