7. APPENDIX

RESTARTING - STUCK AUGERS

Idle time allows grain to settle against the flighting and build up tremendous pressure. Starting 

the augers will likely be difficult if the machine has been idle for two days or more.

Follow the steps below to loosen any stuck augers:

1.

 Turn OFF the main disconnect switch under the bin roof. Turn ON the power supply at the 

main breaker panel. Turn ON the main disconnect switch—and be ready to turn it OFF 

immediately. The augers will start if the grain hasn’t packed too tightly around the flighting. If 

any of the augers are stuck, turn OFF the power immediately and LOCK OUT the switch in the 

OFF position.

2.

  Support the beam by making a set of blocks from 2” x 6” boards (or larger). Be aware that 

because a large amount of torque may be needed to loosen the augers, high torque load 

damage can occur to the Stir-Rite track, to the bin wall, or to both if the beam is not properly 

supported.

3.

  On the stuck auger, place a pipe wrench within 18” of the lower bearing and so that the 

auger can be turned CLOCKWISE (as viewed from above). See 

4.

  Loosen the stuck auger(s)     

 DO NOT TURN THE AUGER(S) COUNTER-CLOCKWISE.

5.

  Remove all tools from the bin and exit the bin.

6.

 Turn ON the main disconnect switch and be ready to turn it OFF immediately.

NEVER TURN STIRRING AUGERS BACKWARDS (Backwards means counter-

clockwise as viewed from above). Turning the stirring augers backwards will 

cause the beam to rise and the drive wheel(s) to leave the track.  This could 

even cause the equipment to FALL, possibly causing severe injury or death.
