FLIGHT CONTROLS
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. Flight Controls
Flight controls consist of these subsystems:
Cyclic controls subsystem
Collective controls subsystem
Upper flight controls subsystem
Anti-torque / directional controls subsystem
Vertical stabilizer control subsystem (VSCS)
The MD900 rotorcraft is right command. The
rotorcraft can be equipped with either single-
or dual-pilot control installations. In a
dual-control rotorcraft, the left main rotor
controls can be removed, the directional pedals
de-coupled and stowed, and covers placed over
the openings.
The main rotor flight controls combine pilot
inputs, from the cyclic and collective control
stick assemblies, to control the main rotor
blade pitch. The cyclic and collective control
stick inputs provide for longitudinal, lateral,
and vertical control.
The anti-torque/directional pedal inputs are
transmitted to the anti-torque NOTAR
fan
and direct jet thruster for directional control
and anti-torque.
2. Cyclic Controls Subsystem
(Ref. Figure 1)
The cyclic controls subsystem provides
longitudinal and lateral control of the rotor­
craft. The cyclic controls move the upper
controls to increase or decrease the main rotor
blades angle of attack in a cyclical manner
around the main rotor azimuth. The result is a
change in the pitch and/or roll attitude of the
rotorcraft. The cyclic control subsystem
consists of the following components:
Cyclic Stick Assembly - Provides pilot
control of rotorcraft pitch and/or roll
attitude.
Cyclic Stick Centering Device - Assists
the pilot in centering the cyclic stick
assembly, both longitudinally and laterally,
during engine start-up and shut-down.
Cyclic Stick Base - Separates longitudinal
and lateral inputs and contains the second­
ary cyclic control stops.
Longitudinal Trim Actuator - Allows the
pilot to alleviate longitudinal cyclic stick
flight loads for trim flight conditions.
Longitudinal Controls Balance Spring

Balances longitudinal control load
resulting from control component weight.
Longitudinal Linkages - Transmit
longitudinal cyclic stick input to the upper
flight controls.
Longitudinal Servoactuator - Hydrauli­
cally assists longitudinal linkage inputs to
the upper flight controls.
Lateral Trim Actuator - Allows the pilot
to alleviate lateral cyclic stick flight loads
for trim flight conditions.
Lateral Linkages - Transmit lateral cyclic
stick input to the upper flight controls.
Lateral Servoactuator - Hydraulically
assists lateral linkage inputs to the upper
flight controls.
A. Cyclic Stick Assembly
The cyclic stick assembly is located in front of
the pilots seat. The cyclic stick is a curved
aluminum tube with a control head and
provides the pilot longitudinal and lateral
control of the rotorcraft. The cyclic stick is
attached to the cyclic base. The cyclic base
limits the range of travel at the cyclic grip to
11 inch (27.94 cm) longitudinally and 10
inch (25.40 cm) laterally.
Cyclic stick inputs are transferred through
control linkages and push-pull tubes to the
longitudinal and lateral hydraulic servoactua­
tors. The servoactuators transmit cyclic inputs
into the upper flight controls.

switch, cargo hook release switch (if equipped),
emergency float deploy switch (if equipped),
