The cockpit roof structure attaches the upper
portion of the cockpit assembly to the center
section of the fuselage. The cockpit roof
structure is fastened to the center pillar and
the left and right door pillars, the FS 155.50
frame assembly, and side skin assemblies of
the general tub assembly. Fastening is by
rivets.
The cockpit roof structure is a composite
sandwich panel. The panel incorporates
multiple plies of graphite/epoxy and a syntac­
tic epoxy foam core. Around the periphery the
core terminates and the panel transitions to a
monolithic laminate.
Center Pillar −
The center pillar is a primary
structural component that provides the
attachment and structural support for the
inboard edges of the left and right cockpit
windscreens. The upper end of the pillar is
mechanically fastened to the cockpit roof
structure, and to the FS 155.50 frame assem­
bly of the general tub assembly. The lower end
of the pillar is secondarily bonded to the chin
bow assembly.
The center pillar is ``I” shaped in cross section
and is fabricated as a composite sandwich
panel with monolithic laminate flanges. The
center section of pillar incorporates multiple
plies of graphite/epoxy and fiberglass/epoxy
cocured with Nomex honeycomb and syntactic
epoxy foam cores. The cap flanges are mono­
lithic and incorporate additional plies of
graphite/epoxy.
Chin Bow Assembly −
The chin bow assembly
is a primary structural component. The
assembly provides support and provisions for
attachment of the lower edges of the left and
right cockpit windscreeens, and the upper
edges of the left and right chin windscreens.
The assembly also attaches the nose access
door assembly, the landing light window, and
battery box panels. The upper ends of the chin
bow assembly are mechanically fastened to the
left and right door pillar assemblies. The lower
portion of the assembly is mechanically
fastened to the cockpit subfloor support
structure and to the tub shell of the general
tub assembly. Fastening is by rivets.
The chin bow assembly is made up of an outer
skin panel and left and right inner skin panels
that are secondarily bonded together.
The outer skin panel is fabricated of graphite/
epoxy with barrier plies of fiberglass/epoxy. In
the center of the panel above the opening for
the aircraft battery, the panel incorporates a
section of Nomex honeycomb core cocured with
the panel skin.
Both the left and right inner skin panels are
fabricated using multiple plies of graphite/
epoxy and fiberglass/epoxy cocured as mono­
lithic laminates.
Door Pillars −
The left and right door pillar
assemblies are primary structural components
that support the outboard edges of the cockpit
and chin windscreens. These components
attach, and are the door frames, for the left
and right cockpit doors. Each door pillar is
attached to the roof structure, chin bow
assembly, and forward tub skin by rivets.
Each pillar assembly consists of an outer skin
and an upper and lower inner door pillar. All
components are fabricated as monolithic
laminates utilizing multiple plies of graphite/
epoxy and barrier plies of fiberglass/epoxy.
Battery Box Panels −
The battery box panels
are secondary structural components. One
upper and two side battery box panels, are
fastened to each other and the interior surface
of the chin bow assembly using secondary
angles and rivets. The panels are located
adjacent at the cutout in the chin bow assem­
bly. Along the lower edges of the side panels,
secondary angles are riveted to the panels
which in turn bolt to the battery floor assem­
bly of the cockpit floor installation.
Each of the battery box panels is fabricated of
multiple ply graphite/epoxy cocured with a
Nomex honeycomb core. Around the periphery
of the panel, the core is tapered and the panel
transitions to monolithic laminate flanges.
