A.6  Maintenance 
and  
Troubleshooting

This section covers maintenance and troubleshooting. Customer service of the prod-
uct is limited to the information presented in this chapter. Factory trained service 
personnel should be consulted if the instrument requires further repair. Damage to 
the system can result if these procedures are not done properly. Instructions for con-
tacting Lake Shore and arranging product service are in section 6.8.

A.6.1 Preventive

A.6.2 Sample Card 
Retainer Replacement

This procedure assumes that the standard insert has been removed from the body, 
and the sample card has been removed according to section A.5.3.3. When the sample 
card retainer replacement is shipped to you, it is shipped attached to the card 
alignment guide. To replace the guide, follow this procedure.

 1. Align the card alignment guide (with stem) to the connector on the middle wiring 

board, so that the line on the side of the guide aligns with the line on the insert 
outer tube.

 2. Using a 2.5 mm hex key, screw in the two M3 screws onto either side of the card 

alignment guide to secure the guide and stem to the connector on the middle 
wiring board.

A.6.3 Sample Card 
Maintenance

This section describes maintenance procedures for the sample card. 

A.6.3.1 Prober Pin Replacement

Follow these procedures to replace the prober pin on the prober pin sample card. You 
will need a number 1 Phillips screwdriver and the 10 mm prober pin sample card 
replacement kit.

 1. Lay the sample card on the card fixture with the prober pins facing up.
 2. Using a number 1 Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the four screws attaching the 

prober pins to the card.

 3. Remove the four old prober pins.
 4. Obtain the new prober pins and appropriate screws from the prober pin replace-

ment kit.

 5. Place the prober pin on the card, and screw it in. Do this to all four prober pins.

6.3.1.1 Cleaning Sample Cards

Wear gloves while performing any procedures dealing with the sample cards to avoid 
contaminating the sample card or other internal components with oils.

To remove a sample mounted to a sample card with rubber cement, gently push the 
side of the sample with a wooden stick or other soft object to shear it from the 
adhesive.
