Reversing the magnet inadvertently will cause the Hall voltage to be the opposite polarity 
and therefore, the carrier type determination will be incorrect (for example, an actual  
n-type semiconductor sample will report to be a p-type).

A.5.2.2 Locking the Magnet for Transport

A locking pin is included in the sample holder assembly to ensure that the magnet is 
secured before transporting the FastHall™ station. Lock the magnet before trans-
porting so that the magnet will not shift or fall off of the base assembly in transport. 
The locking pin is not required for normal use.

A.5.3 Sample Insert

Samples for Hall measurement have either four (van der Pauw geometry) or six (Hall 
bar geometry) connections. Four triaxial cables are included and connect the M91 to 
the top of the sample card. Additional cables may be purchased from Lake Shore.

A.5.3.1 Connect the Sample Insert

The sample insert is intended to be easily removable to gain access to the sample. Two 
thumb screws are located on each side of the sample insert. When the screws are 
loosened, the holder can be lifted off of the magnet assembly. Two guide posts are 
provided to ensure that the sample aligns properly and does not touch the sides of the 
electrical shield when being inserted or removed. Additionally, the guide posts ensure 
that the sample card cannot be reversed.

A.5.3.2 To Install a Sample Card into the Sample Insert

Hold the card firmly and push into the card guide until it engages. Push into the sam-
ple holder. 

A.5.3.3 To Remove a Sample Card

 1. Hold the card firmly and pull out of the holder. 
 2. Once the card disengages from the connector, lift if from the card guide.

After the sample holder is removed, it can be placed in the cradle on the left side of the 
magnet assembly. A Velcro® hold down strap is provided to secure the sample holder 
when it is not mounted to the top of the assembly. 

The card inserts only in one orientation.
