6 Appendix B: TLS-301 Light Sensor
Some applications may require the optional TLS-301 Traffic Light Sensor for optimal performance. The TLS-
301 is a separate device that estimates vehicles’ license plate lighting conditions and controls the exposure
and gain parameters on one or more cameras to ensure high contrast images of vehicles traveling through
the field of view and their license plates, regardless of vehicle speed, weather or ambient light conditions.
As shown in Figure 1 (Section 1.2), the TLS-301 can be integrated into a VIS (Vehicle Imaging System) via a
VJP-300 Junction Panel. See Section 3.2 for more information about installing the VJP-300.
6.1 VIS Power Requirements, including TLS-301
The maximum power to a VJP-300 J-Panel is:

6.2 Positioning and installing the TLS-301
When used, it is extremely important that the TLS-301 is properly positioned at the site. The light sensor
must be placed so that
no
shadows from surrounding structures are cast on side A when the license plates
being imaged by the VISCAM 1000 are in direct sunlight. A useful tip: install Traffic Light Sensor higher than
either the camera or the flash unit so the A-side is in direct sun whenever the targeted vehicles license
plates are.
Because sun angles at any given site can change according to time of day and time of year, it is important
to verify that the proposed setup will function under all conditions. To install TLS-301:
1. Disconnect Power
2. Loosen the four hex screws and remove the flange from the mounting base. See Figure 37.
