About "e2fsprogs"

This package, the EXT2 filesystem utilities, are made available un-

der the GNU Public License version 2, with the exception of the lib/

ext2fs and lib/e2p libraries, which are made available under the

GNU Library General Public License Version 2, the lib/uuid library

which is made available under a BSD-style license and the lib/et

and lib/ss libraries which are made available under an MIT-style

license. Please see lib/uuid/COPYING for more details for the li-

cense for the files comprising the libuuid library, and the source file

headers of the libet and libss libraries for more information.
The most recent officially distributed version can be found at http://

e2fsprogs.sourceforge.net. If you need to make a distribution,

that's the one you should use. If there is some reason why you'd

like a more recent version that is still in ALPHA testing (i.e., either

using the "WIP" test distributions or one from the hg or git reposi-

tory from the development branch, please contact me (tytso@mit.

edu) before you ship. The release schedules for this package are

flexible, if you give me enough lead time.

About "busybox"

BusyBox is distributed under version 2 of the General Public Li-

cense (included in its entirety, below). Version 2 is the only version

of this license which this version of BusyBox (or modified versions

derived from this one) may be distributed under.

About "attr"

Most components of the "attr" package are licensed under
Version 2.1 of the GNU Lesser General Public License (see COPY-

ING.LGPL).
Some components (as annotated in the source) are licensed under

Version 2 of the GNU General Public License (see below),

About "util-linux"

The project util-linux doesn't use the same license for all of the

code.

About "zlib"

ZLIB DATA COMPRESSION LIBRARY
zlib 1.2.7 is a general purpose data compression library. All the

code is thread safe. The data format used by the zlib library is de-

scribed by RFCs (Request for Comments) 1950 to 1952 in the files

http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1950 (zlib format), rfc1951 (deflate for-

mat) and rfc1952 (gzip format).
All functions of the compression library are documented in the

file zlib.h (volunteer to write man pages welcome, contact zlib@

gzip.org). A usage example of the library is given in the file test/

example.c which also tests that the library is working correctly. An-

other example is given in the file test/minigzip.c. The compression

library itself is composed of all source files in the root directory.
To compile all files and run the test program, follow the instructions

given at the top of Makefile.in. In short "./configure; make test", and

if that goes well, "make install" should work for most flavors of Unix.

For Windows, use one of the special makefiles in win32/ or contrib/

vstudio/. For VMS, use make_vms.com.

An experimental package to read and write files in .zip format, writ-

ten on top of zlib by Gilles Vollant <[email protected]>, is avail-

able in the contrib/minizip directory of zlib.
Notes for some targets:
- For Windows DLL versions, please see win32/DLL_FAQ.txt
- For 64-bit Irix, deflate.c must be compiled without any optimiza-

tion. With -O, one libpng test fails. The test works in 32 bit mode

(with the -n32 compiler flag). The compiler bug has been reported

to SGI.

- zlib doesn't work with gcc 2.6.3 on a DEC 3000/300LX under

OSF/1 2.1 it works when compiled with cc.

- On Digital Unix 4.0D (formely OSF/1) on AlphaServer, the cc op-

tion -std1 is necessary to get gzprintf working correctly. This is

done by configure.

- zlib doesn't work on HP-UX 9.05 with some versions of /bin/cc. It

works with other compilers. Use "make test" to check your com-

piler.

- gzdopen is not supported on RISCOS or BEOS.
