Linking Clusters to Form a Subnetwork (NNI Interface)

An ATM subnetwork is a group of ATM clusters connected by NNI trunks. Each NNI trunk connects the
‘boundary switch’ in one cluster to the boundary switch in another cluster, as shown in Figure 17.

Configuring NNI Trunks Between Clusters: On each of the boundary switches that will be linked by
an NNI trunk, you will:

Configure the port for the trunk as an NNI port (using the

SET PORT

command)

Configure a ‘logical link’ for that port (using the

SET LOGICAL_LINK

command) by specifying:

– Virtual Path Identifier (VPI) number
– ATM cluster number (ACN) for the remote boundary switch
– Bandwidth available on the virtual path
– Signalling role for Q.2931 protocol.

You can configure multiple logical links over the same physical port. However, you can only
configure one logical link (using one pair of ATM ports) for each ATM cluster-to-cluster trunk
connection.

Guidelines for NNI Trunks:

You can establish NNI links both over physical links and over Virtual Path connections (VP
tunneling).

You can define a maximum of 16 logical links per NNI port, with VPIs in the range:

– 0-7 over 25.6Mbps ports
– 0-15 over all other ports

The total bandwidth reserved for NNI links is:

– 21.2Mbps per 25.6Mbps port
– 131Mbps per 155Mbps port
